    Al Pacino as Shylock

The New York Shakespeare Festival announced that Al Pacino will play Shylock for their 2010 Shakespeare in the Park Season which will present The Merchant of Venice and The Winter's Tale in a rotating repertory. Merchant will be directed by Daniel Sullivan and Winter's Tale by Michael Greif. Previews will begin on June 9th and the two plays will run on rotating nights for eight weeks. The Rose and the Globe

A new book about the excavations of Shakespeare's bankside playhouses has just been published by the Museum of London. Lavishly illustrated with contemporary drawings, reconstructions and details of the archaelogical findings, the book provides the first concrete evidence of the size, layout and development of the Rose and the Globe theatres. The Georgian Merchants Shakespeare's Globe are presenting a fascinating programme on the relationship between the Georgian Theatre and Shakespeare Theatre traditions. On February 21 there will be a reading of George Granville's The Jew of Venice at Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds. Written just 50 years after Oliver Cromwell readmitted Jews into England and 100 years after Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. Lady Macbeth's Daughter

Just out from Bloomsbury Press is a new book by former English professor and Shakespeare expert Lisa Klein. Albia is the daughter Macbeth would have had if only Shakespeare had created her, Lady Macbeth's Daughter reimagines the events that led to the murderous outcomes in Shakespeare's play. Me and Orson Welles

Zac Efron stars as an aspiring actor caught up in the brilliant world of theatrical whizz kid Orson Welles. Set during rehearsals for the infamous Mercury Theater production of Julius Caesar, Me and Orson Welles also stars Claire Danes (who was a memorable Juliet in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet) and Christian MacKay as Orson Welles. Based on Robert Kaplow's book, the trailer for the film can be viewed here.

 Henslowe's Diary goes online

Dulwich College have made available the infamous diary of Elizabethan theatre owner Philip Henslowe and the papers of actor Edward Alleyn. Included in the archive is a receipt in February 1594 for box office takings of 40 shillings for 'Tittus & ondronicus' as well as journals, letters, contracts, actor's scripts and prompt copies. Oregon Shakespeare Festival announces 2010 Season

Hamlet, in a production by Artistic Director Bill Rauch, will open the season in the Angus Bowmer Theater. A stage version of Kurosawa's Throne of Blood, based on Macbeth, will be adapted and directed by Ping Chong. Twelfth Night, Merchant of Venice and Henry IV Part One will be performed on the Elizabethan Stage.

Shakespeare Initiative for Teens at Public Theater

The New York Shakespeare Festival announced the launch this spring of two new Shakespeare Initiative Programs -

Shakespeare Spring Break for pupils aged 13-17 is a 5 day intensive theater lab.

A Midsummer Day's Camp for aspiring actors aged 13-18 is a two week course concluding with a performance at the Public Theatre.
